Writing
your content
from the bottom up.
People often just scan online content rather than read it word for word,
but you can get your reader’s attention by using an old newspaper
writing technique.
The Inverted Pyramid
Newspaper
stories are often written in an inverted
pyramid style, a style that also works well with online content.
In the inverted pyramid, simply put your conclusion or summary
first, and then follow it with the main body of your content.
This method is very effective at getting people’s attention and
also helps them to focus on the important points in the body of the
text.
If
this style of writing is new to you, try one or more of these three
simple techniques:
- Write
your content, as you would normally do, ending the piece with a
paragraph summarizing its main points.
Then, simply cut that summary and paste it at the beginning
of the article.
- For
small bodies of text, write a one or two sentence lead that tells the reader what the article is about.
- Instead
of using a lead paragraph or sentence, try using titles, headings or
subtitles that briefly summarize the following section of text. Emphasize those headings by bolding or underlining them.
Have
fun experimenting with the inverted pyramid method! Writing for the web has never
been this easy!
