LIFE EVENT PLANNING STAR EVENT
Joanna Parsons and Katilynn Davidson designed a dorm room at Texas Tech using recycled items from the Main Street Store, their homes and garage sales. They were required to find a picture of the item and the cost of each one. The final price could not go over their set budget. A model was created for the judges to see the room layout and accessories. Joanna Parsons won 4th at the FCCLA Regional Meeting and was a State Qualifier.
Type of event:
The life event we have chosen to do is the “Design a Dorm Room”. We both chose this life event because, for us it is very real to be on a tight budget and be in college at the same time.

Description of the role of needs and wants:
While we would love to take the money from our budget to go on a shopping spree, and spend every last dime we have, reality is you have to know how to separate your wants from your needs. Although we would have loved to have had the $50.00 motion detecting lights, we needed a lamp that would light our way through college, so, we went with the $19.99 studio lamp.

Goal Statements:
What we had hoped to accomplish, was to create a nice, sophisticated room that suited both roommates, with a budget of Four Hundred Dollars or less.
Another goal we had accomplished was the knowledge of what it takes to create a dorm room and really experience the emotional part of being in college, we found both very interesting and successful!

Description of Role Values:
My description of the priorities in designing our room was finding furnishings that not only were stylish and modern, but more affordable than designer brands.

Summary:
The challenge we faced was we were on a limited budget and living in such a small town, such as Colorado City, Texas; there are not many places you can go to find quality products. So we have to travel to nearby towns to find better bargains. While shopping on a limited budget you have to go to retail stores, such as Wal-Mart, K-Mart and Target, and while they do have lower prices, but they also lack in variety.
